The Heart of a Neighbourhood

Shelldale Farm Park

Shelldale Farm Park began with a bold idea - that an underused patch of grass beside a community centre in Guelph could become the heart of a neighbourhood.

Working with the Shelldale Centre, local residents, and community partners, we designed an accessible garden centred on raised beds, shared stewardship, and the needs of the people who would care for it. The project got a big boost when we received the Transformative Urban Agriculture Award through the Guelph Urban Agriculture Challenge.

The first 45 raised beds were built in 2021, including 12 fully accessible beds. Today, the garden has grown to 87 beds and supports more than 120 individuals and families from over 23 nationalities—many of them newcomers to Canada.

What began as an open patch of grass became a place to grow food, confidence, connection, and belonging.

growing together

Every garden bed tells a different story. Families grow vegetables they remember from home, neighbours exchange seeds, recipes, and gardening knowledge, and generations learn from one another. For many, the gardens provide the opportunity to grow fresh, culturally meaningful food that isn't always easy to find close to home.

What began as a small community garden has become a thriving neighbourhood hub. Today, Shelldale is shaped by the residents, volunteers, community partners, and local leaders who continue to care for it. Their dedication has transformed the garden into a vibrant model of how food, community, and stewardship can grow together.

community leadership

At the heart of Shelldale is an extraordinary garden coordinator whose warmth, dedication, and ability to communicate in multiple languages helps everyone feel welcome. Working alongside residents, volunteers, and community partners, she has helped cultivate far more than a garden—she has nurtured trust, confidence, and a true sense of belonging.

growing opportunity

The gardens have become a place where people discover new skills, build confidence, and form lasting connections. Children's programs, newcomer initiatives, community kitchens, volunteer days, and visits to Everdale all add new experiences to the life of the garden. It's a place that keeps growing because the people who use it never stop imagining what it can become.
