FROM UNDERUTILIZED URBAN LAND

The Black Creek Story

Where Farm Knowledge Met the City.

Black Creek offered a rare opportunity to apply regenerative farming systems where access to nature, fresh food, and healthy landscapes could have the greatest impact.

Working with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, community organizations, and local residents, we transformed an unused 7-acre parcel of land in the Jane-Finch neighbourhood into a thriving urban farm - where healthy soil, productive agriculture, biodiversity, education and community could flourish together.

lasting legacy of food justice.

Today, Black Creek Community Farm stands as one of Canada's leading examples of community-based urban agriculture. Guided by local residents, dedicated staff, and strong community partnerships, it has grown into a vibrant centre for food justice, environmental education, and neighbourhood leadership.

In the early years, our role extended well beyond farm planning. Together with our partners, we helped shape both the place and the organization—building outdoor classrooms, chicken coops, bread ovens, gathering spaces, and productive growing areas, while working alongside the community to develop the governance and partnerships needed to support the farm's long-term future.

Fresh food is grown and shared through community programs. Residents lead workshops, volunteer initiatives, and seasonal events. Outdoor classrooms, productive fields, a food forest, pollinator habitat, and gathering spaces create opportunities for thousands of people each year to learn, celebrate, and connect with the land.

Perhaps the greatest measure of success is that the farm no longer belongs to its founders—it belongs to the community that has nurtured it, shaped it, and helped it thrive. What began as an underutilized parcel of conservation land has become a place of belonging, opportunity, and environmental stewardship.

We are very proud to have helped lay the foundation for a community asset that continues to grow, evolve, and inspire.
